2009 CIBC Spirit of Leadership Community Award Program
Across the country, CIBC is committed to supporting causes that matter to our clients, our employees and our communities. CIBC aims to make a difference in communities across Canada through corporate donations, and sponsorships to support charities nationwide. Towards the end of every year, CIBC chooses several worthy charitable projects as part of our Spirit of Leadership Program.
The CIBC Commercial Banking 2009 Spirit of Leadership Community Award Program allowed us to partner with our clients and give back to the communities in which we do business. The 2009 Commercial Banking market adjudication panel carefully selected the charitable projects and initiatives of our clients to whom we will contribute a portion of the $40,000 Spirit of Leadership Community Award.
CIBC Commercial Banking is proud to partner with the recipients of the 2009 CIBC Spirit of Leadership Community Award Program. Note: 2010 Spirit of Leadership Award Winners will be announced towards the end of 2010.
Below are the 2009 Award Winners:
Amica - Amica Helping Hands
Amica Mature Lifestyles Inc. operates luxury seniors' retirement residences across Canada. They manage 25 Senior Residences across Canada and are leaders in the design, development, marketing and management of luxury housing and services for mature lifestyles. Amica offers a truly superior lifestyle choice for seniors through its Wellness & Vitality Philosophy. Every aspect of the lifestyle is designed to promote and encourage the resident's personal choice, wellness, and sense of independence, socialization and fun. In addition, they focus on supporting those seniors who are most in need.
Since 2001, through the Amica Helping Hands Community Program, Amica has focused on seniors who have incomes of less than $25,000 and who regularly have to choose among life's basic necessities. Amica Helping Hands dedicates itself to deliver a better quality of life for those seniors who are less fortunate or marginalized. Amica supports the charity through executive leadership, administrative support, and actively endorses resident and employee participation. Support includes raising funds to provide for food baskets. The 2009 Spirit of Leadership award was used to help further key initiatives such as the "Bringing Your World Closer" project. This project provides comforts and necessities to many seniors.

KPMG - KPMG Foundation
KPMG is one of the largest professional services firms in the world and one of the Big Four audit and accounting firms. Worldwide, KPMG employs over 136,500 people in a global network of professional services firms spanning over 140 countries. KPMG has three lines of services: audit, tax, and advisory. KPMG operates in 32 locations across Canada. The firm's more than 430 partners and almost 5000 employees provide services to many of the top businesses in Canada.
Established in 1987 by KPMG's partners, the KPMG Foundation is one of the catalysts for social responsibility within the firm. The KPMG Foundation is one of the ways KPMG supports to charitable organizations and post-secondary institutions in Canada.
KPMG has a number of initiatives that make a difference in the community at large. Through the KPMG Volunteers program, each KPMG employee is given one paid day off to make a difference in their community. Their CEO Community Excellence Awards recognizes up to 20 KPMG employees annually who have made a significant contribution to their community through their volunteer work. Each recipient receives a $1000 donation in his or her name to the charity of their choice. In 2009, KPMG elevated their existing engagement in the community to a whole new level by incorporating Community Leadership as one of the four key components of their overall business strategy.
The 2009 Spirit of Leadership Award allowed KPMG to increase the KPMG CIBC Run for the Cure team's fundraising efforts.

Paladin Labs Inc. - Team Paladin - Quebec Ride to Conquer Cancer
Founded in 1996, Paladin Labs Inc. is a Canadian specialty pharmaceutical company headquartered in Montreal, Canada. Paladin is focused on acquiring or in-licensing innovative pharmaceutical products. With this strategy, a focused national sales team and proven marketing expertise, Paladin has evolved into one of Canada's leading specialty pharmaceutical companies. Paladin Labs Inc. has a long history of being strong contributors to the community.
In 2009, Paladin Labs Inc. put together of team of riders to create Team Paladin. The team of 77 riders rolled up their cycling socks and pedaled to Quebec City for the Quebec Ride to Conquer Cancer. The program provided funds for cancer treatment and cancer research in Quebec. Not only was Team Paladin the largest team in terms of number of riders but they raised the most of any team on the ride - over $330,000 or roughly 5% of the total amount raised by all teams. Paladin used the 2009 Spirit of Leadership Award to support their community initiatives.

Running Room Canada Inc. - Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF)
The Running Room is an Alberta Company, which originated in 1984 out of founder John Stanton's wish to purchase quality running shoes from someone knowledgeable about the sport. After finding the quality of service and knowledge in large sporting goods stores poor, Mr. Stanton decided to fill this niche in the marketplace by opening a small one room store in the renovated living room of an old house in Edmonton, hence the name "Running Room". With over 98 locations across North America, Running Room services the needs of their customers by providing them with the very best product to support an active lifestyle. They also service the community by providing Running and Walking clinics to teach customers how to develop and sustain safe and healthy fitness programs.
In keeping with their service to the community, The Running Room has been a national sponsor of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure since 1993. Their employees not only volunteer their time to help organize local races across Canada, they participate in the Run themselves. Running Room provides Survivor Learn-to-Run clinics as well as product giveaways on the day of the run. Throughout the year, their Pink Ribbon clothing line is sold in their stores, with a portion of the profits going to the CBCF. With their support, CBCF is able to continue to fund innovative research, education and awareness programs about breast cancer, across Canada. Running Room donated their 2009 Spirit of Leadership award directly to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

The Keg - The Keg Spirit Foundation
Established in 1971, The Keg Steakhouse & Bar has perfected a tried and true recipe for creating an authentic steakhouse experience with an atmosphere that is friendly and a price that is affordable. Under the leadership of David Aisenstat, President & Owner, The Keg has expanded to more than 100 locations throughout North America and takes great pride in supporting its employees and communities.
The enthusiastic spirit embodied in The Keg has been a core business value since its inception. That spirit led David to launch The Keg Spirit Foundation, a charitable organization to focus on causes that benefit children and young people. The Foundation continues The Keg's tradition of generosity and giving to the communities in which Keg staff live and work. Money raised from local activities and national promotions, as well as a portion of the sale of Keg branded products sold at retail outlets, are given to charities under the umbrella of The Keg Spirit Foundation. The Foundation concentrates on supporting charities that focus on the development and health of children and youth. To date, The Keg Spirit Foundation has granted more than $4 million to over 300 charities across North America. The 2009 Spirit of Leadership award will be used to support The Keg Spirit Foundation programs.

Tridel Corporation - Tridel in the Community
Tridel is a real estate developer based in Toronto, Canada. It is the largest builder of condominiums in the Toronto area. Founded in the 1930s, it has built over 70,000 homes. The Tridel Group of Companies is one of the largest residential real estate groups in Canada and consists of several affiliates focused in areas of Real Estate which include development, sales, construction, and property management.
Through their initiative Tridel in the Community, Tridel is active in hundreds of charities across Canada. They focus specifically on cultural, social, environmental and health concerns. In 2009, Tridel supported the Building for Opportunities for Life program by donating several scholarships to deserving youth in the care of the Children's Aid Foundation. Beyond financial support, the employees of Tridel Corporation have provided outreach, mentorship and guidance to youth interested in pursuing a career in the trades. Employees on active construction sites have met with youth to discuss their career journey into the trades. In some cases, these mentorships have lead to job opportunities. The 2009 Spirit of Leadership Award was used to increase the number of scholarships available through the "Building Opportunities for Life" program.
